Welcome to FERINART 2010

The United Nations has proclaimed 2010
‘International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures’.

The 4th edition of the International Artisan’s Festival – FERINART SAN JUAN 2010, is part of the official program for this celebration. The festival takes place in the historic center of Old San Juan in Plaza Colón and Plaza Arturo Somohano from April 30 – May 9, 2010.

More than 70 artisans from 32 countries will participate along with more than 125 artisans from Puerto Rico.

Joining the artisans will be a group of cultural dignitaries from UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). The president of the World Council of Artisans located in Atlanta, a representative of the European Union and representatives of the national organizations of Mexico, Guatemala, Martinique, Haiti and Dominica.

Festival Dedication

FERINART SAN JUAN 2010 is dedicated to Dr. Malena Kuss Curadora (Museum of Music and professor at the University of Texas) and Mrs. Pavlova Mezquida Greber (Former Director of Programs for the Support of Artisans at PRIDCO).

International Artisan Highlights:

Sr. Néstor Ricardo Morales – Chile, tallador de imágenes religiosas para vestir, como las que están en las Iglesias que datan del Siglo XVIII y Juan Carlos Ceballos de Ecuador, heredero de la Escuela Quiteña en lo que se relaciona con la talla de estilo colonial.
La japonesa Yasudo Akiko, tejedora y especialista en uno de los artes tradicionales más antiguos de su país, como es el Humihimo (técnica de hacer cordeles).
El Gran Maestro de la música boliviana Javier Magne, quien hace y ejecuta los instrumentos musicales más propios de la región andina. El dará una conferencia con nuestros maestros artesanos y músicos Félix “Febo” y Edwin Gerena.
De Estados Unidos viene Steve Miller, Profesor MFA del Book Arts Program de la Universidad de Alabama.
Por primera vez, tendremos la presencia de dos países africanos, Gambia y Tanzania, con bellos productos de los Mazai, el batik y la bisutería en mostacilla.
Tendremos textiles de Alemania, Brasil, Colombia, Libia, Guatemala, México, Martinica, Paraguay, Uruguay y Venezuela.
La alfarería y cerámica artística y utilitaria de Puerto Rico, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua,
Por Puerto Rico tenemos varios maestros artesanos como Luis Gonzalez Vicente Valentín, Sylvia Espinet y Mary Quiñonez y artesanos de excelencia de la nueva generación como Alex Ríos, Antonio Nieves, Efren Gregoy, Uchy Hernández y otros grandes artífices de nuestras artesanías puertorriqueñas.
Joyería y escultura en vidrio de los esposos Merloz de Francia, miniaturas tejidas en crin de caballo, los adornos de las polleras de Panamá y las muñecas en papier machée de Brasil y en seda de Portugal serán otras novedades que este año ofrece FERINART SAN JUAN 2010.

Cultural Events

During the celebration of FERINART SAN JUAN 2010, a series of special entertainment events will take place. From musical programs in Plaza Colón to conferences, workshops, demonstrations of art craft by Master Artisans, contests and performances for children.

Conferences

There will be a series of conferences in the ‘Sala Capitular de la Casa Alcaldía’ from May 1-7, 2010 between 8:30am and 10:30am. Admission is free to the public.

Workshop Demonstrations

Various Master Artisans will offer workshop demonstrations of their specialties in Plaza Colón from 1:30 pm, through 3:30 pm to provide an insight to their artwork and an international cultural exchange.

You will be able to see demonstrations of Japaneese braided artcraft, blown glass, Se podrá ver allí como se hace el humihimo (adunado japonés para cordeles), vidrio soplado, weaving of miniatures in horse hair, paper mache dolls, woodworking, clay, bamboo, wood carving of traditional ‘household saints’, bobbin lace and many other activities.
